BAA! - Making an Ident for BAA 2022 (1/3)

Now I've returned to classes, we're starting to look into specialisms in the Animation, Games and VFX industry. Before we broke for Christmas break ,we were encouraged by one of our tutors to consider what we'd like to specialise in for the foreseeable future. Like most things, this isn't set in stone as we might change our minds later down the line - but this year is an opportunity to explore our options and learn new techniques before we make a decision in the next year.

What did I pick? I couldn't decide. So, I had a chat with our then Studio Assistant and found out that my uni also allows you to specialise as a Generalist (which is role that basically means you're a jack of all trades and can kinda slip into most departments where they're short on numbers). Works out great for me! I want to make some o my own projects in 3D, so being a Generalist is probably a good idea as it means I can kidna navigate multiple pipelines at once.

Also, our uni has partnered with the British Animation Awards to create some idents for their award show this March! I didn't have much of an idea so I didn't consider the opportunity at all, but I eventually brainstormed one up. Luckily for us the deadline is the end of the module itself, so I'd better get working!

So far I have 3 ideas unrelated to the BAA ident, and a fully rigged model to start finishing some minor tweaks with for the BAAs. I... I love him.

I made a walking cloud.

Look at my walking clouddd! This was used as a reference for the sheep's model.

And because I like to do damage control where I can, I decided to make a mesh for the body in case the mesh wool wasn't gonna work.

The body mesh completed!

Some 3D modelled wool for your viewing, could definitely add some more texture to this.

The could can see now!

The armature before i made any drastic changes to it - I eventually added bones for the eyes to follow and (of course) the FKIK controls that you need to animate this thing.

Here he is! Fun fact: I never unwrapped it. I'm just taking advantage of Blender for this whole project.

You're probably wondering: How come you've changed programs? Aren't you meant to use Maya on this course (and in industry). Well, its because my home PC hates Maya with a burning passion but Blender is its favourite child (and mine I won't lie, Blender is very versatile) - but I'm also waaaaay more familiar with Blender's innerworkings for the sake of this (although animation is something I don't really do in Blender).

Besides, I can rig up and put wooly fur on this lil floof waaaaaaaaay faster in Blender. (I may have a bias I won't lie).

I'll keep this up to date as I work on the lil dood! Maybe we'll see some animation? (Looking at you, Eevee renderer).
